This course will provide a hands-on experience in the art of painting of animal subjects in the East Asian water-ink painting tradition, as well as introduce its brief history of animal painting, aesthetics, and cultural significance. A main theme of the course will be the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac calendar. The course will include a visit to relevant museum and galleries. Representative works by great masters of the past as well as by contemporary artists will be used as models of brushwork and composition in animal painting. Materials used by each participant include brushes, ink stone, ink stick, rice paper or silk, felt, paperweight, seal pad, rubber and glue.
